- Chapters 1 & 2 of the awesome "What Every Programmer Should Know About Memory" though this makes for rather dense reading, at least for me, I think even just gleaning the low level picture is instructive.
- The old classic "Why Functional Programming Matters" by John Hughes. It's well written, still feels relevant, & is worth reading just for the comparison of functional programmers to ascetic monks.
